HG - Katy City Championship 2026 Tournament Details

Location: Element by Marriott Houston Katy | 23653 Grande Centre Dr, Katy, TX 77494
Directions: The hotel is located near Costco Wholesale. Look for the tournament signs that lead you to the playing hall.
Format: 4 Rounds, Swiss
Time Control: G/40;d5
Rating: This event is USCF Regular AND Quick rated (dual rated).
Sections: U800, U1400, Championship (1400+)
NOTE: Sections may be merged depending on entries for each section.

Schedule:
Check-In: 8:15 AM – 8:45 AM
Round 1: 9:00 AM
Round 2: 11:00 AM
Lunch Break: 12:30 PM – 1:15 PM
Round 3: 1:15 PM
Round 4: 3:15 PM
Awards: 5:00 PM, after Round 4 concludes.

Prizes:
1st, 2nd, 3rd for ALL Sections get Trophies.
All other participants will receive medals.
Players must be present at the 5:00 PM awards ceremony to receive their trophies & Medals.

Eligibility: This tournament is open to all ages. Adults are welcome to register.

Section Placement: Section placement is determined by the September 2026 USCF regular rating supplement. Ratings will not be re-checked on the day of the event.

Playing Up: Playing up a section is not available for this tournament. The current player USCF rating determines the section they are placed in. Unrated players may choose which section they wish to register for — if you are unrated and unable to register for your desired section, please contact us and we will get you placed.

Notation: Keeping score (notation) is required for all games. Players may stop keeping score when they have fewer than five minutes remaining on their clock. Please bring your own scorebook and pen.

Byes: Half-point byes are available for Rounds 1–3 and must be requested at least 30 minutes before the round begins. Limit one half-point bye per player. Round 4 byes are zero-point.

Late Arrival: Players not at the board within 20 minutes of the round start will forfeit the game.

Withdrawals: Players who must withdraw are required to notify a TD. Failure to do so may result in a forfeit and affects pairings for other players.

Cancellation Policy: Upon cancellation full refunds will be issued until 9/7. Any cancellation after 9/7 will have a $15 processing fee.

Parking: Free parking is available on site.

Food: A 45-minute lunch break is scheduled. Restaurants are available within walking distance of the venue. Players are also welcome to bring their own lunch.

Behavior Expectations: Players are expected to demonstrate respect towards TDs, hotel staff, and fellow players at all times. Disruptive behavior during games, bullying, or any form of aggression will not be tolerated. Parents are expected to take care of small kids in-between rounds.

Tiebreak Policy: In the case of a tie for a trophy, the following tie breaking methods will be used in the order listed.

1. Modified Median Tiebreak

2. Solkoff Tiebreak

3. Cumulative Tiebreak

4. Cumulative of Opposition Tiebreak

Electronic Devices: Electronic devices, including smartphones, smartwatches, and tablets, are not permitted during rounds. Ensure they are fully powered off and placed in a bag under the table or kept outside the playing area. If a player's phone rings during the round, there can be serious penalties such as disqualification for that round.

Supplies: Bring your own Chess Boards, Clocks with delay option, and Scorebooks! They will not be provided.

USCF Membership: To play in this tournament, a USCF membership is required. If you do not have a USCF membership or your membership has expired, please go to the USCF Website and become a member.
